Abstract: The current population-based study investigated the onset of neonatal urinary tract infection (UTI) and the associated risks of allergic rhinitis.

From 2000 to 2005, 3285 children with neonatal UTI and 13,128 randomly selected controls were enrolled from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan and frequency matched by gender, urbanization of residential area, parental occupation, and baseline year. We compared the risk of allergic rhinitis between the non-UTI and UTI cohorts by performing multivariable Cox regression analysis.

Allergic rhinitis to house dust mites is characterized by a chronic inflammation of nasal mucosa. H1 antihistamines from second generation reduce the rhinitis’ symptoms, but may also have anti-inflammatory properties.

After Elise and Todd Jackson’s son, Elijah, was born 14 weeks prematurely in 2002, he spent 7 months in the neonatal intensive care unit at Rockford Memorial Hospital in north central Illinois. Although Elijah is now an active and healthy 13-year-old, because of medical problems stemming from his prematurity, as an infant he was given a feeding tube, underwent surgery to close the duct between his pulmonary artery and aorta, and needed a tracheotomy to help him breathe.

Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a convenient, non-invasive method for the assessment of active, mainly Th2-driven, airway inflammation, which is sensitive to treatment with standard anti-inflammatory therapy. Consequently, FeNO serves as a valued tool to aid diagnosis and monitoring in several asthma phenotypes.

Abstract

Primary immunodeficiency disease (PIDD) with hypogammaglobulinemia is characterized by recurrent and severe bacterial infections and IgG replacement is the standard of care in many of these patients. Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is becoming increasingly recognized as a factor that affects patient well-being and treatment preferences. In an effort to better understand what factors affect HRQOL in patients with PIDD, we reviewed the published literature that used standardized instruments for the measurement of HRQOL.

Background: Low dose reactive cow's milk (CM) allergic children are at high risk of persistent CM allergy and a positive oral food challenge (OFC). The present study aimed to evaluate if the results of a very low dose (VL) OFC with these children contributes to better management of CM allergy.

We sought to study whether the incidence of asthma and respiratory symptoms differ by menopausal status in a longitudinal population-based study with an average follow-up of 12 years.

Abstract: When questioned, about 10% of the parents report suspected hypersensitivity to at least one drug in their children. However, only a few of these reactions can be confirmed as allergic after a diagnostic workup. There is still a lack of knowledge on drug hypersensitivity epidemiology, clinical spectrum and appropriate diagnostic methods particularly in children.
