Abstract

Objective

Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in pregnant women and their children is an important health problem with severe consequences for the health of both. Thus, the objectives of this review were to reassess the magnitude and consequences of VDD during pregnancy, lactation and infancy, associated risk factors, prevention methods, and to explore epigenetic mechanisms in early fetal life capable of explaining many of the non‐skeletal benefits of vitamin D (ViD).

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

To investigate the safety and efficacy of QMF149, a once-daily, fixed-dose combination of the long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) indacaterol maleate and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) mometasone furoate (MF) for the treatment of persistent asthma. The hypothesis was that QMF149 would not increase the risk of serious asthma exacerbations.

Abstract

Oral platelet aggregation inhibitors are widely used for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary stent thrombosis. Premature discontinuation following percutaneous coronary intervention would pose a grave risk of in-stent thrombosis, acute myocardial infarction and eventual death.

Abstract

Obesity is a known risk factor for allergic asthma. It has been recognized as a key player in the pathogenesis of several inflammatory disorders via activation of macrophages, which is also vital to the development of allergic asthma. We investigated the mechanism of obesity-related asthma and whether treating obesity through exercise or diet ameliorates the severity of asthma in the obesity-related asthma model.

Background 

A considerable number of children with asthma remain symptomatic despite treatment with inhaled corticosteroids, resulting in significant morbidity, reduced quality of life, increased healthcare costs and lost school days. The aim of our study was to assess the efficacy, safety and tolerability of once-daily tiotropium Respimat 5µg, 2.5µg and 1.25µg add-on to medium-dose inhaled corticosteroids, with or without a leukotriene modifier, in children aged 6-11 years with symptomatic asthma.

Background

Galectin-3 (gal-3), a member of the β-galactoside-binding animal lectins, is involved in the recruitment, activation and removal of neutrophils. Neutrophilic asthma is characterized by a persistent elevation of airway neutrophils and impaired efferocytosis. We hypothesized that sputum gal-3 would be reduced in neutrophilic asthma and the expression of gal-3 would be associated with other markers of neutrophilic inflammation.

Background

Allergic sensitisation to food may occur through non-gastrointestinal routes such as via skin or lung. We recently demonstrated in mice that cutaneous or respiratory pre-exposures to peanut proteins on intact epithelia induce a Th2 priming and allow subsequent oral sensitization without the use of adjuvant. We then aimed to assess the impact of a similar pattern of exposure to another relevant food allergen, cows´ milk.
